Transparency and openness at IChemE

Jon PrichardIChemE is a registered charity and a widely respected professional engineering body. Direction in all matters of finance and policy is provided by our governing Council, whose members are also the trustees of the charity. Operational activity is planned and delivered by the executive team that I lead and who are accountable to the Council. Since taking on this role, I have, amongst other things, commenced a programme that strives to achieve the highest standards of openness and transparency in all our dealings both internally and externally.

In his 2016 presidential address, Professor Jonathan Seville confirmed that our Council had initiated a review of the Institution's governance. The outcome of the review was discussed by Council on 24 July 2017. The options for change will be shared with leaders and influencers throughout the Institution, as well as with the wider membership, in August and September 2017.

If the outcome of the review requires us to amend the Institution's Charter and By Laws, then such amendments will be considered and voted on at a General Meeting scheduled for 21 May 2018.

I joined IChemE as your Chief Executive on 30 January 2017. From the outset, I stressed the need for the release all material facts that are relevant to the fulfilment of our charitable objectives and ongoing business activity. This constitutes good practice in the charitable sector and is a behaviour that we should all aspire to.

The governance review will also bring forward recommendations that, if adopted by the members, will embed this principle into the Institution’s business planning and reporting in the years ahead. In the interim, I have implemented Council’s request for the creation of a ‘Fact Check’ resource where members can find verified and referenced information on topics of interest.

These pages will be periodically updated to reflect Council’s deliberations and any key issues that are raised by members.
